The World of Stories, 2009

The World of Stories takes an anthropological approach to video art. The video came about as part of a collaboration with the Goethe-Institut in Ramallah in the Palestinian Territories which explored the topic of trauma. Video was chosen as the medium for exploring the subject, primarily because it provides the possibility of expressing temporality. We used a stationary camera to film children telling personal stories in real time, combined with everyday experience, real incidents from wars, elements from fairy tales and local storytelling traditions. The World of Stories tries to show how geopolitical realities affect our internal landscapes, which can react upon the traces of those realities.

Videoarbeidet The World of Stories har en antropologisk karakter. Videoen er et samarbeid med et traumeprosjekt ved Goethe-instituttet i Ramallah. Videomediet anvendes her primært for dets muligheten til å gjengi temporalitet. Barnas egne historier er filmet i realtid og gjennom et stillestående kamera, og kombinerer hverdagslige erfaringer med faktiske krigshendelser, elementer fra eventyr og lokale fortellertradisjoner. The World of Stories antyder slik hvordan geopolitiske realiteter nærer indre landskap, som igjen kan virke tilbake på sporene etter disse realitetene.
